ENTER THE CENTER : THANKS TO CALTRANS' AWARD-WINNING NEW ORANGE COUNTY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT CENTER, DRIVING ON FREEWAYS IS A MOVING EXPERIENCE

This article describes the award-winning $10 million Orange County Traffic Management Center (OCTMC) in Orange County, California. The project required close coordination between Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol to develop a highly advanced technological environment in order to effectively manage traffic on the county's freeways. The author describes the project's use of CCTV which allows Caltrans operators and the CHP to monitor every stretch of freeway and instantly dispatch appropriate emergency services whenever necessary. The author also describes the center's architecture, which was built to withstand an earthquake and allow operations to continue.
