IS ABUSE OF DISABLED PERSONS' PLACARDS A PROBLEM FOR YOU?
This article describes how two cities in California dealt with the misuse of disabled person parking placards. City officials in Sacramento initiated a new enforcement program known as Sacramento Taskforce on Placard (STOP) Abuse. A plain clothed parking enforcement officer patrols given areas, looking for potential abuse of disabled person (DP) placards. Violators may be subject to misdemeanor charges as well as fines. In Beverly Hills, parking enforcement officers (PEOs) have successfully monitored vehicles for placard abuse, resulting in the confiscation of nearly 250 DP placards during the first year of the enforcement program. A public education program addressing DP placard abuse has helped in reducing the number of violations.
