CALCULATION OF STRUCTUREBORNE NOISE TRANSMISSION IN SHIPS USING THE "STATISTICAL ENERGY ANALYSIS" APPROACH

Although it is possible to calculate the expected structureborne sound transmission through a ship structure using empirically based calculation models, this is, in principle, a very conservative method which does not take into consideration individual differences in the steel construction of the vessel. This paper discusses the possibility of calculating the expected vibration amplitude distribution throughout a ship's structure with a higher degree of accuracy, using a "statistical energy analysis (SEA)" approach. An expample is given of such a calculation model in which the structure is assumed to consist of combinations of plates joined in either T-junctions, L-junctions or +-junctions. Results of such a SEA-calculation for a multi-element ship-like structure are given. The calculation results are compared with results of vibration distribution measurements on the corresponding prototype structure. Order from: BSRA as No. 48,245.
