NOISE REDUCTION WITH CONSTRAINED VISCO-ELASTIC LAYERS: A CASE HISTORY
An experiment of applying visco-elastic layers as a noise reduction means at a late stage of ship construction is described. The ship to which these layers were applied has a sister ship on which high noise levels had been measured in the after cabins during trials. In the most unfavourably located cabin a noise level of 74 dB(A) had been measured. For this reason, the experiments with visco-elastic layers were performed in a similar location on the partially-completed ship. It was found that the sound level was reduced 4-5 dB(A) following the application of a 1 mm visco-elastic layer. Order from: BSRA as No. 48,244.
