TOWARD INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS FOR THE 2008 OLYMPICS
Deployment of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is 1 of 12 key areas of research and development in China's 10th 5-yr plan, lasting from 2000-2005. China's highway system has grown significantly over the last decade. Air pollution, primarily from traffic congestion, is a major problem that has beset Beijing for decades and is a central concern for the successful execution of the 2008 Olympics. Recently, Beijing's government has made great strides toward solving this problem, and ITS technology will likely play an important role in the solutions. This installment deals with ITS issues in China, with a focus on the architecture and technology that will be a starting point for the construction of the ITS in Beijing for the Olympics in 2008.
