SOURCE STRENGTH, TRANSMISSION AND ISOLATION OF PROPELLER NOISE
The Authors discuss the results of investigations in which the source strengths of two propellers were measured using a novel technique based on the reciprocity principle. It is shown that this technique has a great potential especially in conjunction with modern signal processing techniques. The results of two types of experiments are presented: 1) Full-scale measurements of the acoustical source strength of cavitating propellers. 2) Model-scale measurements of the insertion loss of various compliant full coating configurations. For the hull coating investigations the variables were the area of the layer, the distance between the sound source and the ship's hull (source clearance) and the receiving position inside the ship. Area and source clearance proved to be the most important factors; the position inside the ship had no significant effect on the insertion loss. Order from: BSRA as No. 48,232.
