WHEELCHAIR SAFETY AT RAIL LEVEL CROSSINGS
This paper explores the international literature on wheelchair safety at level railroad crossings. Issues investigated by the paper include the following: guidelines and legislation on access for disabled people; the dimensions needed for maneuvering wheelchairs; wheelchair wheels trapped in flangeway gaps; warning devices; sight distance and warning times; improvements undertaken in railroad crossings.
