PROGRESS IN TRANSPORT AND TOURISM RESEARCH: REFORMULATING THE TRANSPORT-TOURISM INTERFACE AND FUTURE RESEARCH AGENDAS. IN: TOURISM AND TRANSPORT. ISSUES AND AGENDA FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM
This chapter serves as an introduction to the book. Previous research on the interface between transport and tourism is reviewed, especially with reference to the tourism and transportation systems. The major challenges constraining tourism and transportation are discussed and the agenda for further research is explored. Findings suggest a need for greater reflectivity in the research to highlight the synergies between the two sectors of tourism and transportation. Both sectors have mutual interests in fulfilling customer demand. Two vital elements for the transportation sector dependent on tourism markets are: the need to address the principles of sustainable development; and the need for innovation, marketing and supply leadership so that demand can be more effectively managed.
