DOCUMENTATION OF FOUR OCEAN-RELATED COMPUTER MODULES

Four ocean-related computer programs recently developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are described by the three authors. Apart from documenting these programs so as to make them available for general use, it is intended that they should also serve as starter elements for a system of software capabilities to supplement the Marine Industry Advisory Service (MIDAS) of the MIT Sea-Grant programme. Source language for the first three modules is PL/I and for the fourth is FORTRAN IV. Module I: Program MCTRAJ (Monte Carlo Simulation of Oil Spill Trajectories). While simulating oil-spill trajectories and wind effect, this program does not include effects of tidal variations. Module II: Program T14TRAM (TDF 14 Tape Generated Transition Matrices). This program takes as input formatted data tape prepared by the National Climatic Center and generates as output the resultant probabilistic wind transition matrices to be used by the offshore (MCTRAJ) and onshore (NEARSHORE) spill-tracking programs. Module III: Program NEARSHORE (Nearshore Oil-Spill Tracking Simulation). Module IV: Program TWOFOIL (Two-Hydrofoil Interaction Problem). TWOFOIL seeks to solve the two-dimensional lifting flow about two symmetric bodies. This means either determining the lift characteristics of twin foils, not necessarily identical, or estimating the interaction force and moment of two ships in very shallow water with respect to their draught.
