THE NEXT 100 YEARS

The petroleum industry is evolving in terms of its structure, needs and technology. Research and development efforts are examining the possibilities of improving fuels and lubricants performance, how these products are used or consumed in engines and lubrication systems, and how to minimize and deal with the byproducts that are produced. These improvements will require revised specifications, test methods and standards as the existing ones become obsolete. The transportation segment of the petroleum industry is of special interest, as engine performance, efficiency and environmental concerns will require changes in formulations for fuels and lubricants. Potential changes in diesel fuel, gasoline and aviation fuel are described in terms of their effect on standards, test methods and specifications.
