U.S. AIR TRANSPORTATION SINCE 9/11/2001: DISRUPTION OR TRANSFORMATION?
Air transportation in the United States commercial service airports changed substantially immediately following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. This paper examines whether the changes experienced are structural or cyclical variations. The time period considered is October 1, 2001 through September 30, 2003. Even though almost all U.S. airports experience substantial reductions in flights during the year after 9/11/2001 that could be attributed to a system shock, there are signs that indicate a fundamental industry restructuring which predates the 9/11 attacks.
