EVERYONE'S SPECIAL
Special Transit was founded in Boulder, Colorado in 1979 to serve seniors, people with disabilities, and those who could not afford other forms of public or private transportation. During the first 15 years of the system's operation, the focus was on improving the quality of life for those who had limited mobility options. The article describes how Special Transit transitioned in 1994 into HOP transit service for the City of Boulder. This version of the system opened up a new transportation option for traditional riders while also inviting new ridership by providing an innovative way for students, commuters, visitors and residents to move around the community with ease. In 2000, the Denver-Boulder Regional Transportation District enlisted Special Transit's expertise in providing a new service in two dissimilar communities in the region. Brighton, a self-contained rural community of 20,000 and Superior, a suburban bedroom community of 9,000, became, first candidates and then recipient of flexible and community-appropriate mobility option.
