MASSIVE EXPANSION PROGRAMME FORGES AHEAD
The second largest railway expansion program in the world is in Iran with 3300 km of lines under construction. The expansion program began about ten years ago when the government decided to increase rail's share of the transport infrastructure budget to about 30%. The program is being pushed through to connect the country's main ports and cities to the rail network, to facilitate the extraction of minerals, and to enable Iran to reach its full potential as a rail transit country. Today's 7300 km rail network is expected to grow to about 10,600 km in ten years.
