SIMULATION AND VALIDATION OF THE DYNAMIC INTERACTION BETWEEN TRAINS AND A NEW BOWSTRING BRIDGE
When the decision was taken to replace a substantial underbridge on one of the UK's main inter-city routes, the infrastructure authority wished to validate the new design by undertaking a thorough investigation of the dynamic interactions between passing trains and the new bridge structure. The dynamic response of the complete train-bridge system was modelled by using finite element analysis of the bridge structure to establish the normal modes of the bridge, and then incorporating these modes in a full dynamic model of the whole train using AEA Technology Rail's VAMPIRE software package. The results obtained from the simulation were the acceleration and displacement response in the bridge structure, and the influence of the bridge on passenger comfort in trains traversing it. Once the bridge had been built, accelerations and displacements of the bridge structure were measured, which enabled the results of the theoretical analysis to be verified.
