UK AIRPORT EXPANSION PLANS

The British Government has released its 30-year strategic plan for airport expansion in the Air Transport White Paper. It projects the country's largest expansion of airport facilities since World War Two. Growth is recommended throughout the country, not just around London. The first new runway serving London won't be put in the Thames estuary basin project, which has been canceled. Instead, it will go to Stansted, with a planned date of 2011-2012. Birmingham, the second largest city in the country, is slated to get a new runway now that proposals for a new airport have been rejected. In addition to ground facilities, the government is developing a strategic framework for all major infrastructure developments. Globally, it is calling for stronger noise and emissions controls, with a possible trading scheme across the European Union. All airport operators are expected to develop new or revised master plans in the next 12 months in response to the white paper.
