GOING FRANGIBLE : ALL AIRPORTS ARE REQUIRED TO REPLACE APPROACH LIGHTING MASTS BY 2005, BUT HEATHROW IS AHEAD OF THE GAME

An update is presented on a program to replace the lighting masts on approaches at Heathrow as part of an overall program and requirement that the new masts be in place by 2005 under ICAO rules. The new rules stipulate the frangibility required of the masts, so that they present less of a threat to airplanes in collisions. The requirements also cover lights, wiring, ILS antenna and signage. After crash tests were used to set the standard as being able to break when hit by the wing of a 6,600-lb plane traveling at 87 mph, the organization is seeking to develop a computer simulation against which other materials can be tested. The ICAO recommends that the fist goal is to try to place obstacles out of the way of aircraft moving on the ground, but if that isnt feasible, they should be of minimum mass and frangible enough so that a collision with them won't cause the aircraft to lose control.
