PROOF'S IN THE PUDDING : THERE'S EVIDENCE THAT REMOTE-CONTROL LOCOMOTIVES ARE PROVIDING YARD PRODUCTIVITY AND SAFETY BENEFITS
Executives at a number of Class I railroads are touting the advantages of remote control locomotive (RCL) operations, as they have improved productivity through faster and softer couplings and have lead to safer working conditions for employees. Despite these documented benefits, officials at the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) dispute the benefits of RCL and contend that railroads are avoiding regulations as well as witholding some accident information. The article also describes some of the different types of RCL equipment that is available.
