THIRST FOR 'SAFETY FIRST': SMALL-ROAD OPERATORS WHET APPETITE FOR SAFER BEHAVIOR BY STRESSING EDUCATION, INCENTIVES AND ONE-ON-ONE COMMUNICATION
Short line railroads are focusing on education and training, communications, and other incentives in order to promote safety at worksites. Both the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) and RailAmerica Inc. are promoting educational and on-the-job training programs. Software programs, such as the one developed by the National Academy of Railroad Sciences and Burlington Northern Santa Fe, are being used to train workers on topics such as personal safety and operating rules covering track buckling, boom truck operation procedures, and electrical troubleshooting. The article also briefly relates examples of two short line railroads that have had success in reducing their safety indexes.
