POSITIVE ENERGY : STRENGTH OF DUININCK BROTHERS INC. SHOWS IN HAYES AWARD PROJECT

This article Describes the winning project for the 2003 Sheldon G. Hayes Award from the National Asphalt Pavement Association, the most prestigious prize in the industry. It was awarded to Duininck Brothers, Inc. for a 14-mile project along two southbound lanes of U.S. 287 in Wilbarger County, TX. The company specializes in the portable asphalt business, taking on remote locations that are difficult to service. The $4.2 million project involved some new techniques, including two new tests for joint density and the segregation profile and a sensitive zero-blanking band profilograph. New materials included a coarse friction surface course carrying a nominal 5/8-in. coarse aggregate and a cellulose fiber. The pavement was failing due to heavy traffic and moisture. Another difference was Texas DOT requirements limiting the thickness of the first course. There was also a new technique to pinch joints with the required tolerances. Specs provided, along with names of award finalists.
