THE EPIDEMIC OF PEDIATRIC TRAFFIC INJURIES IN SOUTH FLORIDA: A REVIEW OF THE PROBLEM AND INITIAL RESULTS OF A PROSPECTIVE SURVEILLANCE STRATEGY

Four of the 5 most dangerous U.S. cities for pedestrians are located in Florida. This paper identifies specific regional risk factors for the high rate of pediatric pedestrian trauma in the Miami-Dade County region of Florida. Of the 29 cases studied prospectively, 3 occurred near ice cream trucks and 13 involved "dart-outs." Hospital charges ranged from $336 to $172,283. All 29 cases had implications for the design of high-risk or population-based prevention strategies. Specific recommendations include equipping ice cream trucks with extending stop signs and reengineering a dangerous intersection.
