PARKING AND TRIP GENERATION CHARACTERISTICS OF HOSPITALS
Traditional hospital facilities have become a thing of the past. Hospitals are constructing, remodeling, and adapting their facilities to fit the needs of today's ever-changing demographics and health care delivery systems. The usage as well as the design of hospitals has developed into a "one-stop shop" for health care. This change has caused some hospitals to rethink how their internal and external transportation needs are being met. These changes have produced significant impacts for hospitals, adjacent neighborhoods, and local/regional transportation systems. HDR has had the opportunity over the past several years to work on hospital master plans across the country. The hospitals included in this paper are located throughout the country and provide various services for their respective markets: (1) Heartland Regional Medical Center - St. Joseph, Missouri; (2) Cleveland Clinic's Fairview Hospital- Cleveland, Ohio; (3) Carroll County General Hospital - Westminster, Maryland; (4) Methodist Medical Center - Omaha, Nebraska; and (5) McKenzie-Willamette Hospital - Eugene, Oregon. While working on the master plans, parking and trip generation data was collected to help forecast new travel patterns and parking demand. The paper will summarize the trip generation and parking demand data as it relates to the: (1) Number of Hospital Beds; (2) Number of Employees; and (3) Weekday Peak Hour of Generator/Adjacent Street (AM & PM). The paper will also compare the results of the data collection to the rates provided by ITE's Parking Generation and Trip Generation manuals. The information presented in this paper will help cities and engineers properly plan for the changing uses of today's hospitals.
