FACILITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH REDUCED MOBILITY AT SNCB
This article outlines the policies of the Belgian railway system to make travelling by train more accessible to less able people. This includes not only wheelchair users but all passengers needing assistance. Panels representing disabled people were included in the consultation process. Rolling stock improvements include wheelchair spaces, access doors and modified facilities. Mobile ramps were designed to make access to the train easier, with three types to suit different environments. Certain stations have been selected for improvements to facilities, depending on their geographical location, level of staffing and proximity to institutions for disabled people. Station improvements include slope access, lifts and tactile floor panels. Staff availability is also being addressed.
