THIRD-RAIL TRAMS ACROSS THE GARONNE

This article describes the new tram system being installed in the city of Bordeaux, France. Operating problems on the original line A have caused delays in opening lines B and C. The light rail network is being installed as part of an urban improvement scheme, and the power source in the city centre sections is APS (Alimentation par sol), a ground level system featuring two running rails and a central third contact rail which provides a full power supply to each tram car as it passes. Changeover between overhead catenary and APS modes takes place while the vehicle is stationary at a stop. The ground-level supply is energised by a digital message broadcast repeatedly to an antenna under the contact rail. Trams are made up of motorised articulated modular units. A further phase of line building is projected.
