A SUNNY DISPOSITION : POWERING EQUIPMENT USING THE SUN HAS SEVERAL ADVANTAGES
Alameda and Contra Costa Counties in the San Francisco Bay Area are using solar power to operate traffic monitoring sites along two corridors that are part of the East Bay SMART Corridors program. Using solar power and radio modems to communicate traffic data does not intrude into heavily traveled streets and eliminates congestion that usually accompanies installation of traffic monitoring equipment. It also avoids the costs of digging up the road to install cables. This article describes the scope of the SMART Corridors program and its objectives. The project requires cooperation among 25 agencies and cities. The article also describes the technology involved, such as radar vehicle detection, digitized video, wide area networking wireless communications, solar power and automatic vehicle location.
