A WHOLE NEW IMAGE : ROMANIAN POLICE FORCE CHANGE
Romania's roads are the safest in Central and Eastern Europe according to United Nation's figures, and part of the reason is attributed to the delivery of more than 250 vehicle mounted speed detection and video capture units. This article describes the proliferation of leading edge ITS technology in post-revolution Romania, as well as the attitudes of the police in procuring new equipment and training. The new vehicles were manufactured by the German company ROBOT. The new video cameras, with x72 zoom lens, can operate in all lighting conditions. The video is wired for sound and both images and voice commentary are recorded on a VHS recorder in the rear of the police vehicle. An LCD color monitor allows police to show the offending driver his infractions. A Python II mobile radar system measures speed of offending vehicles to within the nearest kilometer per hour.
