THE FACE OF ITS IN THE US : DEVELOPMENT SIN TRAVELLER INFORMATION BY PHONE
This article describes the traveler information number 511, how it came into being and the outlook for its future, which the author describes as "use it or lose it." He details the pros and cons of its governance by the FCC, while deployment is left up to states, local jurisdictions and telecom carriers. In 2005, the FCC will review progress in implementing the number and determine whether or not it's worthwhile to keep it reserved for travel information or enable it to be used for other purposes. The article describes the coalition which coordinates deployment efforts, and reports that so far only 13.6 percent of the U.S. population have access to a 511 system. The article also looks at the industry's involvement in the program, where it is most successful and least successful.
