HIGH-PERFORMANCE CONCRETE PAVEMENTS COME OF AGE
High-performance concrete boasts high strength and durability. Industrial waste materials used as admixtures add strength, minimize shrinkage and make the material more environmentally friendly. FHWA- sponsored research has performance goals for HPC pavements including increased service life, decreased construction time and lower maintenance costs. FHWA's Concrete Pavement Technology Program, begun in 2004, will focus on improving every aspect of portland cement concrete pavements, mix design and construction, including HPC pavements. States are also using HPC in construction efforts, and projects in Ohio, Virginia, Illinois, Texas and Michigan are demonstrating the cost effectiveness of such material.
