RISING ABOVE THE REALITY ON NEIS
This article describes the conditions faced during tunneling for the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS), being built along three reaches for the city of Los Angeles. Work began with pre-excavation grouting in mid-2002. The first of three Lovat TBMs arrived in March 2003. The 8.5 km alignment runs through loose alluvial deposits, with bolted and gasketed pre-cast concrete segmental primary lining before installation of internal pre-cast concrete carrier pipe. Describes adjustments made to the machines, difficulties of working in "gassy" ground and the compressed air systems needed. The job is 99% complete and should come in on time and within budget.
