METEOROLOGY, TECHNOLOGY GOOD START TO SAFER ROADWAYS
National Research Council recommends that the federal government establish a national road weather program that utilizes advances in meteorology to make roadways safer. A recent report, "Where the weather meets the road : A research agenda for improving road weather services" states that adverse weather causes 1.5 million vehicle crashes annually resulting in 800,000 injuries and 7,000 fatalities. The report suggests that the Federal Highway Administration lead the effort in creating regional research centers to develop new technologies to monitor and communicate to users the effects of weather on road conditions. Existing technologies such as dynamic message signs are already used to provide time-sensitive information regarding weather conditions.
