NEW URBANIST PARKING CONCEPTS : SOLUTION TO SPRAWL THROUGH PARKING INNOVATION

A number of new parking structures have been built in accordance with the principles of New Urbanism, an urban design movement that aims at revitalizing the downtown core and transforming sprawling suburbs into walkable communities. For instance, the 15th and Pearl Mixed-Use Parking Structure in Boulder, Colorado, earned a 2003 Charter Award from the Congress for the New Urbanism. CNU commended its designers on creating a structure that takes safety into account, but not at the expense of accessibility and openness. By combining parking, retail and office space in a pleasing design, the structure has helped revitalize the East End district. Completed in 1999, the 700-car parking structure has five levels above grade and two levels below. The parking structure and its surrounding retail space have different structural systems, with the parking structure cast in place with pre-cast concrete and the retail and office space framed in steel. It was designed in this way to enable permitting and construction of the facility on the half-block site.
