WORK-RELATED MORTALITY AMONG BRITISH SEAFARERS EMPLOYED IN FLAGS OF CONVENIENCE SHIPPING, 1976-95
The paper's purpose was to identify and analyze the causes and circumstances of deaths among British seafarers who were working for flags of convenience merchant shipping between 1976 and 1995, and compare those fatalities with British seafarers employed in British merchant shipping. Official mortality files provided the data used. The results indicated that British seafarers working for flags of convenience registries appeared to be at greater risk of mortality through maritime disasters, as well as through occupational accidents and suicides.
