RADIO TRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM (ATACS)
JR East is in the process of developing an Advanced Train Administration and Communication system (ATACS) that is based on information technology and deploys a division of control between the wayside and on-board equipment from a functional perspective to replace the methods that relied principally on wayside equipment. The following three key aspects are embodied in the system: detection of the position of trains; transmission and receipt of information and transmission of it to other trains, to track composition equipment at stations, to maintenance personnel; and control based on the position information, such as control of velocity, route control, control of alerts at grade crossings.
