THE MANCHESTER DRIVER BEHAVIOUR QUESTIONNAIRE: A CROSS-CULTURAL STUDY

This study applied the original Manchester Driver Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ) by sending a postal questionnaire to drivers in Britain, Finland and The Netherlands. To investigate the applicability of the Finnish and Dutch versions of the DBQ, exploratory factor analysis together with target rotation and factorial agreement indexes were calculated. The comparison of the factors indicated that the DBQ 4-factor structures (aggressive violations, 'ordinary' violations, errors, and lapses) found in Finland and The Netherlands were congruent but not perfect with the target structure found in Britain. The two second-order factors - deliberate violations and unintentional errors - were found in all three countries. The paper also discusses issues related to cross-cultural use of traffic behavior surveys.
