PROCEEDINGS--WORKSHOP ON MATERIALS HANDLING FOR TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION

With the anticipated increases in tunnel construction in the next decade, greater demands will be made on transportation sytems to remove tunnel muck at rates consistent with tunnel excavation rates. This workshop discussed and noted that conventional materials-handling systems such as rail, rubber-tire vehicles, and conveyors will have to expand their capabilities. It was also stated that hybrid and lesser known systems such as pneumatic and slurry pipelines must be considered as potetial systems for muck haulage, since they show substantial promise for transporting the volumes projected for the next decade. /UMTA/
