LOCATION REFERENCING FOR REAL-TIME TRAVELER INFORMATION

A variety of location-referencing schemes are available and utilized in various intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications. One scheme that is gaining wide use for Traveler Information Systems (TIS) in the U.S. and Europe employs tables of predefined locations and road elements. Each table and each location/road element within a table is assigned a unique, concise identifier (ID) which can be used unambiguously to refer to a specific location. This paper describes the benefits of Location Tables for traveler information systems and how these tables have been implemented in the U.S. and Europe. It also explains how location IDs can be linked to digital maps in order to support dynamic route guidance and other personalized traveler information applications.
