IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALTIC SURFACINGS IN TROPICAL COUNTRIES USING ASBUTON

Fatigue failure is a main reason as to why pavements fail to perfrom. This is dependent on many factors with the type and grade of bitumen among the most important. This paper considers the resistance to fatigue cracking of Asphaltic Concrete (AC) and Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) containing a type of natural rock asphalt binder from Buton Island, Indonesia known as Asbuton. In the lab examination, 9 blends of bitumen were considered. It was found that significant improvements in resistance to fatigue cracking could be achieved by adding refined Asbuton to the binder. The research indicates that performance of roads in hot climates like Indonesia may be improved by the use of Asbuton.
