POST-TRAFFICKING FORENSIC TESTS ON A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT TEST ITEM
Post trafficking forensic tests performed on one of the flexible test items at the National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF) are described. The test item was of conventional flexible construction on a subgrade having strength of approximately 8 CBR (California Bearing Ratio). Structural layer thicknesses were 5 in. of P-401 asphalt, 8 in. of P-209 crushed aggregate, and 12 in. of P-154 uncrushed aggregate. The pavement structure had failed by shear deformation in the subgrade and aggregate layers. Maximum rut depth was approximately 4 in. within the center of one of the traffic lanes and maximum upheaval was approximately 1.5 in. to the side of one of the traffic lanes. A trench 4 feet wide was opened across the 60-foot width of the test pavement to a final depth of 4 feet in order to expose the subgrade to a depth of 2 feet. During excavation, the density of the aggregate materials was measured in 3 places; 1 in each of the 2 traffic test lanes and 1 in the center of the test pavement (in the undisturbed lane between the traffic lanes). After removal of the aggregate materials the surface of the subgrade was cleaned in preparation for measurement of subgrade material properties. CBR, density, moisture, and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer measurements were made at the top of the subgrade at 2-foot intervals along the centerline of the trench. The same measurements were then made in the subgrade at 4 depths, 6 in. apart in 3 places; in the traffic lanes; and in the center lane. Records were made of profiles of transverse deformation at the interfaces between each pair of layers in the pavement structure.
