TRANSPORTATION ASSET MANAGEMENT: TRENDS AND CHALLENGES
The Federal Highway Administration, in partnership with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, has established an asset management methodology to aid state and local municipalities adopt the business practices that private industry has been using for many years to manage the total life cycle of its large assets. While nearly all officials recognize the value of the methodology, they have had problems with implementation due to a lack of management tools, as well as government organizational and political legacy issues. However, several new trends and solutions, discussed in this article, are making the adoption of an asset management methodology easier.
