ROCKING THE EU

New European aggregate standards were adopted by the Quarry Products Association and the Highways Agency on 1 January 2004. The construction industry will adopt the standards on 1 June 2004. The EU standards will allow wider use of recycled and secondary aggregates and are designed to ensure uniformity in quality. The criteria by which aggregates are judged safe for trade and use are listed. The new European standards for aggregates are as follows: BS EN 12620 Aggregates for concrete; BS EN 13043 Aggregates for bituminous mixtures and surface treatments for road, airfields and other trafficked areas; BS EN 13055 Lightweight aggregates; BS EN 13139 Aggregates for mortar; BS EN 13242 Aggregates for unbound and hydraulically bound materials for use in civil engineering work and road construction; BS EN 13383 Armourstone; and BS EN 13450 Aggregates for railway ballast. The British Standards Institution has produced a national guidance document for each of the new European standards for aggregates. The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) is also providing guidance on the implementation of the new standards.
