A BROAD RIDE

This article mentions some of the ways in which the city of Paris, France, is encouraging cycling as a means of transport. Urban transport plans promote adoption of policies for "soft" modes of transport, including cycling, and cycling is increasing as provision improves, in the form of shared bus/cycle lanes, cycle paths and lower speed limit zones. For longer trips, provision for combined use of cycles and public transport is increasing, on suburban railways and the metro. Cycle parking both in town and at stations has also improved. Cycle accidents in inner Paris tend to be minor, although safety is often a problem at junctions and with aggressive driving attitudes. Policy ideas are being shared on an international basis.
