MINNESOTA: STREETCAR NAMED CONSPIRE
The twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis in Minnesota have one of the fastest rates of traffic congestion growth in the USA. The history of trams in the two cities, from horse tramways in the late 19th century to the development of the electric tramway run by Twin Cities Rapid Transit, is outlined. The financial and legal problems experienced by the company when it was run by Charlie Green and later Fred Ossanna are described. The company was renamed Minnesota Enterprises Inc in 1962 and it was then sold to a state agency, now Metro Transit, in 1970. In 1997 plans were passed for the Hiawatha light rail line. Bombardier-built low-floor light rail vehicles will run on the 20 km line. Plans for the central and south-west corridors are outlined.
