CRASH LANDING
Lorry-mounted crash cushions have been developed to protect highway operatives during road maintenance. They work by absorbing the kinetic energy of a vehicle as it impacts, allowing it to be brought to a controlled stop. The Smartstop crash cushion, designed and developed in the UK by Cellbond Composites with TM Safety Signs is described. It looks like a yellow box in a cage. The box contains a honeycomb of aluminium cells that absorb the load. The box is supported by a latticework of metal. TRL conducted tests with the Smartstop system using a Nissan Micra and a Vauxhall Omega. In both tests the vehicles remained upright without damage to the passenger compartments.
