ON THE RIGHT TRACS
Major investment is required to prevent further deterioration of the UK road network. The UK government has declared that from 2005/06 automated surveys will check the condition of all local authority roads. The provision of consistent, reliable condition data is vital if the funding levels for highway maintenance are to be sustained. Automated surveys measure road surface conditions at normal road speed via cameras and lasers mounted on a highway maintenance vehicle. The automated TRACS Type Survey (TTS) is reported to be adequate for modern designed roads where it is safe to assume lasting foundations. Possible problems on local roads include foundations with an unknown quantity and problems with access to the road surface due to parked cars. The system cannot deal with verge damage. Experience with TTS in Scotland is described. The possibilities of combining TTS with ground penetrating radar are considered.
