SYNTHESIS OF SEQUENCES FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROLLERS USING TECHNIQUES OF THE THEORY OF GRAPHS
Increasing traffic on the road systems demands additional efforts in the optimization of traffic signals. Studies show that the choice of sequence is of considerable importance in minimizing total delay rate. This delay rate minimization is subject to various restraints expressing safety, logical necessity, and the management policies for the individual traffic streams. The simple general form of such restraints is elucidated and a method for finding the minimum cycle time consistent with an arbitrary set of restraints on a general sequence is presented. An initial computer program for this method shows it to be very efficient and useful to screen sequences before the more difficult and laborious calculation of minimized delay rate. The mathematical and conceptual analysis employed in obtaining the results depends heavily on the mathematical theory of graphs.
