THE CONCEPTUAL CONTEXT OF UNCERTAINTY IN MODELING TRAVEL BEHAVIOR. IN: NEW HORIZONS IN TRAVEL-BEHAVIOR RESEARCH
Uncertainty is considered a major problem in travel demand forecasting because demand forecasting is felt to be the major output of research. The attractiveness of automobile is discussed as a critical point of the dominant consumer choice conceptual framework. Also discussed are the limitations of classical consumer theory. The paper emphasizes two points: the need to integrate the different individuals of a family in modeling the decision process, and the importance of reflecting the influense of perceptions over space of the social structure constituting the urban environment of any individual in the forecast of future levels of mobility.
