A HIERARCHICAL FLIGHT NETWORK MODEL BASED ON PASSENGERS' AND AIRLINES' BEHAVIOR
In the aviation industry, it is very important to analyze quantitatively the interactions among passengers, airlines and airport operators. In this paper, with taking into account behaviors of passengers and airlines and airport capacities, a "Hierarchical Flight Network Model", which has four advantages is presented: (1) ability to explain the competition between airlines considering the route choice behavior of passengers; (2) ability to depict the network formation process of airlines; (3) ability to evaluate the effect of deregulation and airport administrator's behaviors on aviation industry; and (4) ability to simulate the complicated aviation market in a reasonable and easy way. Using travel demand, strategies of aviation industry and airport capacities as input data, the model can predict the demand on each airline, flight network structure of each airline and the level of flight concentration to each airport. Calibration and validation of the model indicates that it has reasonable accuracy. The model is then applied to evaluate the impacts of the extension of Chicago airport on America Aviation market, using the data of 1998. It is illustrated that the model could simulate and investigate the influence of a change in an airport to the airline network structure as well as the hub function of other airports.
