LEVEL FLOTATION COMPLIANCE GUIDELINE

The purpose of the level flotation regulations is to increase the visibility and survivability of individuals after a boating accident has occurred by requiring manufacturers to design certain boats less than 20 feet in length to float in an approximately level attitude when swamped, thus providing a platform from which the survivors can be rescued. This Level Flotation Compliance Guideline contains explanatory and interpretative information, illustrations and diagrams to aid the average boatbuilder in complying with the level flotation regulations. This guideline does not dictate the methods a manufacturer must follow to comply with the regulations, but it is a guide to methods that, if they are followed, are acceptable to the Coast Guard as meeting the intent and purpose of the level flotation regulations.
