EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT BUILDING AN ITS ARCHITECTURE
The development of a regional intelligent transport system (ITS) architecture by the Virginia Department of Transportation's Northern Virginia District (VDOT NOVA) is described. The architecture details the interconnections of VDOT facilities and stakeholders and describes the flow of information between the agencies and VDOT NOVA operations. The development of the architecture used a strawman architecture based on existing ITS frameworks and the development team's knowledge of ITS in the region. The system is coordinated with the Washington DC ITS and the Maryland Statewide architecture. The Outreach element of the project was aimed at improving stakeholder involvement. A Communications Plan was developed to provide the framework needed to support the interconnects and information flows between VDOT and the project stakeholders. GIS was used to store and process information about NOVA ITS assets. An interactive project Web site was developed to make the architecture a dynamic tool. The lessons learnt from the development of the architecture are outlined.
