DETERMINATION OF CONSISTENCY CHARACTERISTICS OF SOILS
The mechanical response of soil may be characterized as stiff, transition, or fluid, depending upon its consistency at various moisture contents. This program was charged with the development of test method and hardware not having the disadvantages of traditional plasticity tests. In particular, the test method should not require removal of aggregate or drying to near zero moisture content. It should test the soil under conditions similar to earthquake in the field, yet have the potential for determining the effect of any stabilization or other treatment that might be used in highway construction. After reviewing numerous parameters, it was determined that the most attractive approach is to measure strength or stiffness of soil specimens compacted for moisture-density determination (AASTHO T-99 or ASTM D-698). Subsequent testing with 13 soil types indicated that the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K sub O) is appropriate both as a classification test and for use in earthwork design. The K sub O test device and procedure are fully described.
