UNDERSTANDING CONTROL STRATEGIES AND TECHNICAL FEATURES OF VM SIGNS
This article describes a study which was designed to investigate drivers' comprehension of control strategies and the technical features of variable message signs (VMS). Three problems were examined in the study: 1) how drivers understand factors that influence the control of VMS, 2) how drivers interpret flashing displays and flashing amber lights on the displays when compared with a steady display, and 3) how drivers interpret different speed displays. In order to obtain a more comprehensive picture of driver opinion and knowledge, data was collected from England, Finland and Italy.
